Vacuum Oven Standard Operating Procedure

Internal Designation: S2400006

Model: Jeio Tech Lab Companion OV4-65 Vacuum Oven, 65L; 120V

Operating Procedures

General Operating Procedure:

Baking out items:

Ensure oven is clean

Place items in oven, shut door and close the valve

Turn the pump on. The pressure should reach around 15 Torr, the last tic on the dial, in ~20 minutes.

Set the wait on and wait off timers to the time for the oven to be evacuated and the bake out time, respectively.

The pressure has gotten to 1 Torr in the past, so hopefully this is reached during the bakeout.

Taking items out:

Ensure oven temperature is room temperature.

Close valve to pump and quickly after turn off pump (this is recommended by the oven manufacturer to avoid oil from the pump getting into the oven)

Open valve to pump

Slowly open vent valve. This is a needle valve and it is not too sensitive so it may need a rotation

Wait for the pressure inside the oven to get all the way to atmosphere

You can now open the oven door

Initial Testing:

Remove all components from inside oven

Plug in power cable into white outlet

Close door and valve

Attach IDP-3

Test 1: Pump

While the oven is at room temperature, turn on the pump and make sure the pressure goes very near the minimum value on the gauge

Take a note of the time for the pressure to stabilize

Turn the pump off, then open the valve on the oven (this step ensures we can add air as intended)

Test 2: Pump and Oven

Turn on the pump and wait until the pressure has stabilized

Then set the oven to 100ºC, 150ºC, then 200ºC, ensure no alarms are triggered and set temperature is reached (in a reasonable time)

Ensure the pressure stays low and the oven reaches 200ºC

Try the wait on and wait off timers

Turn off the oven

When the temperature has reached room temperature, then turn the pump off and open the valve on the oven

Not doing: Oven alone

Set oven temperature to 100ºC, 150ºC, then 200ºC, ensure no alarms are triggered and set temperature is reached (in a reasonable time)

Try the wait on and wait off timers

Cleaning

Do not uses abrasive or chorosive chemicals like HCl or Acetone

Hazards:

Fire:

The oven can reach a temperature of 250ºC and thus poses a fire hazard

Ensure a fire extinguisher is nearby

Implosion:

The oven is at vacuum and poses a (small) implosion risk

Electrical:

The system is powered using a standard 60 Hz, 120 V wall connection.

Hazard Controls:

Wear eye protection and chemically resistant gloves
